| RESUMO O objetivo deste estudo prospectivo foi analisar a função do ventrículo esquerdo de cadelas que apresentavam sepse ou não e diagnosticar a depressão miocárdica de forma precoce, por meio do feature tracking imaging bidimensional (FTI-2D).Vinte e nove cadelas diagnosticadas com piometra, patologia usada como modelo experimental para sepse, foram avaliadas. Os animais foram submetidos ao exame ecocardiográfico convencional e ao FTI-2D e divididos em três grupos: grupo I (controle), grupo II (piometra sepse) e grupo III (piometra não sepse). | In this study, 360 male broilers, out of which 240 of a fast-growing strain (Cobb500), and 120 of a slow-growing strain (Label Rouge), were used to evaluate the effect of dietary fiber on digesta transit time and digestive metabolism during the period of 1 to 42 days of age. | En esta investigación, se evaluó el efecto de las diluciones del agua de coco y la adición de biotina sobre el crecimiento de Saccharomyces cerevisiae. En este sentido, la dilución 1:1 adicionada con biotina (µ= 0.21 h-1) y biomasa (3.32 g/L) fue suficiente para dar los requerimientos nutricionales a la cepa estudiada, en comparación con el agua de coco 100% (µ= 0.13 h-1) y biomasa (3.28 g/L) y un medio cultivo sintético (µ= 0.12 h-1) con biomasa de 2.86 g/L. | This study evaluated the effects of strain, stocking density and dietary energy level on the feathering of broiler chickens. Four trials were carried out between September 2000 and April 2002. There were 10,685 broiler chicks from the strains Ross 308, Cobb 500, Hybro PG, Hubbard, MPK, and Isa Vedette. The bids were reared at stocking densities varying between 10 and 16 birds/m² and were given diets containing different metabolizable energy levels. Broiler feathering was evaluated either by atrributing scores from 1 to 10 to feather covering along the thigh and back (visual inspection), or by determining the percentage weight of the feathers at 28 and 42 days of age. | Feeding management of laying hens has been focused on the direct influence of nutrient intake on weight gain, especially at growing phase. This study evaluates nutrient digestibility, performance, development of the digestive tract, body composition, and bone quality of two strains of laying hens fed with different levels of neutral detergent fiber (NDF) during the growing phase from the 7th to the 12th week of age. | Spodoptera frugiperda (Smith) is a polifagous insect of major economic impact in the western hemisphere and exhibits two strains (i.e., corn and rice) that are morphologically identical but differ in ecology, genetics and physiology. In this work we identified these strains and their respective hybrids by using a PCR-RFLP of the COI gene and PCR of the tandem region FR. Moreover, we performed a population structure analysis by using 253 larvae from Tolima, a region where S. frugiperda is a pest on corn, rice, sorghum and cotton. | The newly mapped Kapiti-Manawatu Fault System (KMFS) in southern North Island, New Zealand, accommodated similar to 3.5 km of basement throw over the last 3 Myr. Along-strike throw profiles are generated using seven stratigraphic markers, interpreted from seismic reflection profiles acquired < 3 km apart. The profiles are symmetrical about their point of maximum displacement, and cumulative profiles suggest that the reverse fault system behaves coherently. The KMFS originates from the reactivation of extensional structures, with fault lengths remaining constant over time. Contractional deformation started at circa 1750 +/- 400 ka. | Effects of yolk sac removal (deutectomy) upon performance of chicks from three divergent strains were tested to evaluate the importance of endogenous nutrition on the post-hatch phase. Chicks from three different strains (Hy-Line W98, Cobb 500, and JA57) were submitted to a surgery procedure after hatching. Half of them had the residual yolk removed, and the other constituted a sham-deutectomized group.
